This time last year i just enjoyed lifting and running, to be honest it was all pretty unstructured and not very goal orientated other than simply enjoying fitness and knowing it was a good focus point to lock in to and use as a driving force to improve other areas of my life. After doing my level 2 and 3 personal training course my real love for sports and competition reignited. As a teenager and a younger adult i was always typically good at football and athletics (don’t worry this is not a ‘i could have gone pro’ statement) but finding Hyrox i instantly saw the equal opportunity for potential and i knew i wanted to see what i was made of.
I had about 12 weeks to prepare for this and with my own fitness knowledge and and obsession with the body and performance i got to work, of course i classically thought i had this under control. Luckily for myself and my performance in January i started going to Hyrox Corby bootcamps and Podium1 Hyrox classes once a week which definitely gave me a closer insight to what i needed and gave my performance the boost it needed for race day.
For some strange reason and my big self belief i gave myself a goal of 70 minutes for my first event with no race experience and pure optimism. Iv since learnt that underestimating your first Hyrox race is extremely common…
Race Weekend –
Solo traveling to northern Spain and having no idea of the structure of a Hyrox race day was nerve wracking and stressful…everything you need before a race of course. Loving to explore and adventure as soon as i landed i hit the city the day before the race wracking up a nice 30,000 steps and eating around 2000 calories with about 100g of carbs, again not ideal.
Race day came and i managed to work the metro and make it to the venue fro check in, northern Spain does not really cater for tourism so my only tactic was to follow the Puma Nitros until i saw a Hyrox sign.
Everything about walking through that venue was 10x what i thought it would be, so loud, so fast paced and spectators and athletes everywhere. Somehow i had to get in race mode or what i thought was race mode as i had not competed in anything in well over 10 years. I made to the tunnel and my HR was sat at 145BPM i knew it was going to be a tough gig from there.
The race actually went smoothly, other than the sleds feeling like the heaviest things iv ever pushed and pulled, farmers carry feeling like 100kg no 48kg and the wall balls trying to take my soul way i managed to finish the race just outside my target at 73 minutes.
While i missed my goal i was buzzing with my result and i knew from there i was hooked
I had to find my next race….
