Are we having enough fun?

I posted on instagram a post labelled ‘we are all still kids who love PE’ and it left me thinking have we sucked the fun out of the sports and exercise we love?

We can be driven and still have fun

We can be focused and still play

Behind all the seriousness of adult life, goals and all the stresses that come with it, we all still have the need for fun, play and of course light hearted competitiveness. This year iv flipped the narrative on how how i approach my drive for more and of course i still have huge goals but i have just found myself having fun the whole time.

I believe in this lovely little but growing corner of the fitness world that we call hybrid fitness we have the perfect ingredients to make sure we still have the fun our inner child relishes so much. I see it every week. The variation of the training models, the community we meet weekly at the gyms and run clubs. The races and events that get on both locally in the community and even the main stages nationally and internationally. I find myself at every event, every session, every track day just thoroughly enjoying myself.

The harder the session the more joy we have (afterwards of course).

The mistakes we make, the mistakes we see.

The support we give, the support we receive.

The goals we hit, the goals we miss.

We can still be driven and have fun, we can still be focused and have play.

We have an opportunity to enjoy the journey and let the process of chasing goals be the fun without being bogged down by the external accolades.

‘i have to get sub 20 5KM’, ‘i have to get sub 60 hyrox’, ‘i have to bench 100kg’, ‘ i have to have single digit body fat’

All these goals are perfectly fine and mostly achievable but what happens when you don’t hit them? If the narrative gets flipped and you just aim to get better than last time and have a good time while doing it then its very rare to lose?

i changed my perspective this year and im the happiest iv been and still making progress in all aspects of life. Of course i still have external goals but the pursuit of chasing them has been the best time ever, and iv missed nearly every goal iv had anyway…

COOL, still be driven, still have goals but just enjoy it, have fun. Play a little and laugh a lot.

One day we wont be able to do all this….
