Over 15 years in and out the industry, on a personal level chasing fitness goals to coaching, trying to find the best education and of course countless hours reading blogs, tweets, instagram posts and diving into the depths of YouTube to to find one common thing…. 99% of the population do not reach the standards to be accepted into the elite sub-branches of the fitness community.
Cant bench over 100kg? Not a weight lifter. Cant Run a sub 20 minute 5k and a sub 3 hour marathon? Not a runner. Cant complete 100km in 24 hours? Not an ultra runner. Cant complete 50 kipping pull ups? Not a cross-fitter. You can see where i’m going with this.
And then here’s the other catch.
If you manage to break into the exclusive clubs, You are there for life and you have to absolutely hate every other genre and die on the hill of your whole hearted conviction that what you do is the only way to be fit, healthy and strong….and whatever everyone else does is so far bellow you. Now don’t get me wrong, I fully understand why someone would have an emotional connection to something that works for them and in reality probably changed their life. Because that’s what fitness does, it changes lives.
But it’s our jobs as both professionals and participants of the industry to make it accessible to everyone, so it can change the lives of everyone it touches. And this is where the new world of hybrid fitness can open its arm to every corner of the world, and keep the doors open to every level of fitness.
Maybe being able to lift a few weights, run a few kilometres, swim and do a burpee is in reality just called fitness. But its been branded now. Hybrid. We cant control what the industry does with branding and marketing but we do have an incredible opportunity here, which leads to my one and only call to action from this piece…
Keep hybrid fitness inclusive.
